Summary

The Family and Medical Leave Enhancement Act of 2009, introduced in the House of Representatives on February 3, 2009 by Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, would expand the coverage of the Family and Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”) to include employers with more than twenty-five employees. Currently, the FMLA covers only employers with fifty or more employees. The Family and Medical Leave Enhancement Act would also expand the reasons an employee could take FMLA leave, such as to participate in a child’s or grandchild’s educational or extracurricular activities or to take a child or elderly relative to a medical appointment.

Current StatusThe bill has been referred to the House Committees on Education and Labor, Oversight and Government Reform, and Administration.
