Summary
The Family Leave Insurance Act of 2009, introduced in the House of Representatives on March 25, 2009 by Rep. Pete Stark, would allow eligible employees to receive annually 12 weeks of a family and medical leave insurance benefit to care for a new child, a relative’s serious heath condition, and the employee’s own serious health condition. Eligible employees could also receive the benefit to care for a relative who is a servicemember or because of “any qualifying exigency” related to a relative serving in the Armed Forces in support of a contingency operation. Under the bill, the benefits would be paid out of an employer funded trust fund. Employers with equivalent or better benefits could opt out of the trust fund.
