Sen. Kennedy promises veterans’ reemployment legislation

In a November 8, 2007 press release, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education. Labor and Pensions committee, claimed that since September 11, 2001, some 11,000 reservists and guardsmen have been denied reemployment rights after their return from active duty. Other statistics cited in the press release include an assertion that:

Almost half of reservists (44%) and National Guardsmen who filed a USERRA complaint with the Department of Labor reported being dissatisfied with DOL’s handling of their case – up from 27% dissatisfaction in 2004 – and more than a third reported that DOL’s response was not prompt.

Although silent as to specifics, the press release notes that Senator Kennedy plans to introduce legislation to address these issues.
