Tracking the Senate Races, November 26, 2008 -- MN Recount Plot Thickens, GA Campaign in Full Swing Again
In Minnesota, the Coleman and Franken camps sent lawyers to weigh in as the Canvassing Board considered whether to count some 6,400 rejected absentee ballots. As of this moment, over 82% of the ballots have been recounted, and the Star Tribune reports:
Coleman entered the recount guarding a 215-vote lead out of 2.9 million ballots cast. Through Tuesday night, state figures showed his lead stood at 238 votes when Nov. 4 tallies are compared with new counts in precincts where the recount is done.
In addition to the 6,400 absentee ballots at the heart of the Board debate, there are some 3,600 recounted ballots being challenged -- meaning this race may not be decided any time soon, and likely after much litigation.
In Georgia, on the other hand, the run-off has the parties in full-blown campaign mode again. In the days since Bill Clinton stumped for challenger Jim Martin, former Republican presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee canvassed the state for incumbent Saxby Chambliss. And yesterday, former GOP Veep nominee, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) announced she would campaign with Chambliss in the coming days. Some are even speculating whether President-Elect Obama might visit the Peach State to drum up support for Martin, beyond the robocall he recorded recently. Most polls give Chambliss a slim 2-3point lead over Martin.
