Tracking the Senate Races, December 1, 2008 -- Run-Off and Recount

We may be inching closer to resolving the remaining two Senate races:

In Georgia, tomorrow voters will return to the polls to cast ballots in the run-off between incumbent and EFCA opponent Saxby Chambliss (R) and challenger Jim Martin (D).  Today, Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) was in Georgia campaigning for Senator Chambliss' re-election.  On the other side of the ballot, Martin's campaign held a rally starring hip-hop star Ludacris.  Voter turn-out and the amount of Libertarian votes cast for Chambliss will likely decide the outcome of this race.

In Minnesota, on the other hand, signs point to a prolonged fight as challenger Al Franken (DFL) now claims he might not be satisfied with the results of the recount, and may pursue any and all avenues to possible victory -- including court litigation or a direct appeal to the U.S. Senate itself.  Most reports from objective sources place Coleman ahead by 282 to 340 votes, with 92% of ballots recounted.

As things stand today, Democrats and Independents account for 58 seats in the next Senate; Republicans for 40.  60 votes are required to overcome the type of filibuster that ended EFCA's journey through the 110th Congress.
